UCC NAMED AFRICA’S TOP UNIVERSITY; VC EARNS CONTINENTAL LEADERSHIP HONOUR

Congratulations to the University of Cape Coast (UCC) on its distinguished recognition as Africa’s Outstanding University of the Year 2025, and to its Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, for receiving the Africa Outstanding Leadership Award at the 4th Africa Education Summit held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on 21st March 2026. The summit, which convened education leaders, policymakers, and researchers from across the continent under the theme “Advancing EdTech Integration in African Education: A Unified Roadmap for Action,” served as a strategic platform for shaping the future of education in Africa.

This prestigious honour, conferred through a rigorous and merit-based selection process involving nominations from across the globe, recognises UCC’s outstanding contributions to teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement. Over the years, the University of Cape Coast has built a strong reputation for academic excellence, producing highly skilled graduates and advancing research that informs policy, drives development, and addresses critical societal challenges. The award therefore not only affirms UCC’s institutional strength but also positions it as a benchmark for quality higher education across Africa.
The recognition of Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto further underscores the importance of visionary and results-oriented leadership in transforming higher education institutions. His leadership has been characterised by strategic direction, commitment to excellence, and a collaborative approach that harnesses the strengths of faculty, staff, and institutional partners. His emphasis on innovation, teamwork, and resourcefulness has contributed significantly to enhancing the university’s global visibility, strengthening academic partnerships, and expanding opportunities for research, teaching, and extension services.
In receiving the award on behalf of the university, Justice William Anaam Atuguba (Rtd), Chairman of the UCC Governing Council, described the honour as a landmark achievement not only for the institution but for Ghana as a whole. He highlighted the critical role of universities as intellectual hubs and policy think tanks, stressing that national development is closely tied to the strength and competitiveness of higher education institutions. At the same time, he drew attention to pressing infrastructural challenges facing the university, including inadequate student accommodation and limited lecture facilities, calling for sustained government and stakeholder support to preserve and enhance UCC’s position on the global academic stage.
This dual recognition, of both institutional excellence and outstanding leadership, significantly enhances the global standing of the University of Cape Coast and opens new avenues for international collaboration, research funding, and academic exchange. It reinforces the university’s capacity to attract attention from global partners while strengthening its role as a center for knowledge generation and innovation in Africa.
As Ghana celebrates this remarkable milestone, the achievement stands as a powerful symbol of what is possible when excellence, leadership, and strategic vision converge. It reflects not only the progress of a single institution but also the broader potential of African universities to compete globally, shape public policy, and drive sustainable development across the continent.
